When we first moved into this new house we immediately decided to start composting. Not only is it a great way to give back to the environment, it's great for gardens. Having never composted before I did some light research and here's what I came up with.
For our composting needs we have a 5 gallon bucket with a lid under our sink. All of our compostable items go in here first. This prevents us from having to run outside every time we have to scrape our plates.
I make a point of emptying this bucket every Monday (at the same time I take the trash to the curb). Because it's just the two of us this works out nicely.
Our compost bin is an old trash can that I've converted by punching holes in the sides and bottom.
I've also set my compost bin off the ground on a few small cinder blocks. This is to allow it to drain and would be important if my bin was metal instead of plastic.
The holes are about 1/8 of an inch thick. That's just enough to make sure the compost gets air circulation and drainage. But not so much that it's coming out of the sides of my bin.
When researching composting I came across a few really good lists of what to and not to compost. I took those lists and compiled one of my own. To make it easy I attached that list next too my indoor bucket.
.
So there you have it. Easy home composting.
