Step One

So, here I am. Standing above my little patch of land I call ‘garden’. All I can do is shake my head and wonder at my vast task ahead. Yes, I am referring to the process of tilling my garden. I’m in the first stage of my gardening process and I’ve already managed to run into a problem, no tiller. The tools I have at my disposal consist of a rake, a hoe, and a shovel. While good and strong, these tools, unfortunately, do not a tiller make. All I can do is dig in, literally, with my shovel. It doesn’t take long before I find that this will not due. Simply breaking up the dirt with the shovel leaves me with lumps of wet claylike dirt. These will not due for my garden. So, I amend the plan. First, I go down a row with my shovel turning the dirt over. After, I use my hoe to break up the clumps left behind. Not bad, I think as I look over the row I have just completed. With a little raking I can even it up and presto! I have a freshly “tilled” garden.

It’s sad though. By the time I was able to come up with the plan, implement it, and revel in my work an hour had already gone by. In that time I could have fired up a tiller and finished the whole garden. Perhaps I should look into renting one. Maybe that’ll be worth my while.
